S3: DESIGN

using my designs from stage 2, i began sketching the basic shape of my building. i used the shape of the liver for the aerial view and it also inspired me to have the hospital have different elevations at different points. the images of the lungs, where the cartilage of the bronchi and bronchioles, led me to the decision to place metal arches coming out of each of the orbs. the shapes made by the tendons in the heart will be used in the concrete cladding of the arches which will connect each section of the hospital together.

after making my sculpture, using clay, i inserted wire into the separate orbs which represent the cartilage which protrudes from the lungs. i created this sculpture so that i was able to get images of each of the perspectives of the building and create designs on adobe illustrator. because it would have been very hard to try and create the arches which join the orbs using clay, i am going to make them in my designs.

after designing my arches i decided to begin my model making with balsa wood. i had a few different ideas about how to approach the spherical shape my design and how i would present this in a model. as balsa wood is very fragile, i had to work really carefully. i cut semi-circles of 3cm, 3.5cm, 4cm and 5cm in radius. i then glued them using UHU glue and created this sort of filament design, with 16 balsa filaments per orb. i then attempted to use paper for additional filaments, to fill the shape out. i didn't like the way that the paper looked as it was extremely hard to glue 3 filaments per gap, and have them all line up and be flush with one another. i am now going to create the base of the model with the arches and steel rods.
